From his obit: Age 17 saw service in the Sekukuni War with Farreira's Horse, took part in Basuto War with Dime's Rifles and the Warren Expedition with Carrington's Horse. He assisted in organising a company of East Kent Yeomanry in 1900 and took them out for service during the South African War as captain. Decorated with the D.S.O. for assisting in sving the guns at Leeukop.

Jewish Chronicle Obit: The coffin was wrapped in a Union Jack and surrounded by the sword and medals of the deceased Major, was carried into the mortuary hall and from there to the grave, on the shoulders of the Highland Light Infantry detachment. After the coffin was lowered into the grave, the Pipe-Major played on the bagpipes the deceased's favourite lamment. "Lochabar No More".
