- Mr Toplitz died suddenly at Hong Kong, China. He was traveling in the Orient on business and pleasure according to an announcement in the New York Times 13 May 1921.
- Melville S. Toplitz died 10 May 1921. He had arrived in Hong Kong on 8 May 1921. He was buried 11 May 1921 in the Jewish cemetery in Hong Kong with full Jewish ritual upon advice by the officers of the local synagogue. A State Dept Representative was present at the ceremony. On 13 May 1921, a member of the House of Representatives, Julius Kahn, sent a letter to the American Consul asking that the body be returned to the US for burial. On 16 May 1921, the American Consul in HongKong sent a telegram reporting that the burial had taken place on 11 May with full Jewish Ritual. On 23 May 1921, the consulate wrote to Julius Kahn to explain what had taken place, and asked for reimbursement of $14.45 for the telegram. On 24 May 1921, the received a telegram from the American Consul General in HK, asking if the family wanted to have the body exhumed, and also requested $300 to cover expenses already incurred and avoid the sale of the effects [long list attached]. On 28 May 1921, The State Dept. informed Julius Kahn about the telegram. On 15 June, the State Dept. received another telegram from the American Consul stating that the [disinterred] remains were shipped 6 June aboard the steamer Salier and were due to arrived.
