{"id":515,"date":"2010-04-11T23:13:25","date_gmt":"2010-04-11T22:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cemeteryscribes.com\/blog\/?p=515"},"modified":"2014-10-09T12:39:51","modified_gmt":"2014-10-09T11:39:51","slug":"gloucester-old-jewish-burial-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cemeteryscribes.com\/blog\/gloucester-old-jewish-burial-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"Gloucester Old Jewish Burial Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The old Jewish Cemetery in Organ\u2019s Passage Gloucester was finally cleared in 1938 when the land was transferred to Gloucester Council for use as a children\u2019s recreation ground, and the remains transferred to the separate section in the new Gloucester Corporation Cemetery at Colney Hill<\/p>\n<p>The first burial in the Organ\u2019s Passage ground took place in 1784\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cemeteryscribes.com\/getperson.php?personID=I11616&amp;tree=Cemeteries\">http:\/\/www.cemeteryscribes.com\/getperson.php?personID=I11616&amp;tree=Cemeteries<\/a><\/p>\n<p>and the last, some 100 years later in 1886<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cemeteryscribes.com\/getperson.php?personID=I11647&amp;tree=Cemeteries\">http:\/\/www.cemeteryscribes.com\/getperson.php?personID=I11647&amp;tree=Cemeteries<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the early part of this period, Gloucester was still a busy port, but the difficulties of navigating the shallow tidal stretch of the River Severn approaching the city appears to have acted as a deterrent to foreign-going vessels, which possibly explains why the Gloucester Community, which drew its members from quite a wide area and included the long established Levy family of Ross on Wye <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cemeteryscribes.com\/getperson.php?personID=I11632&amp;tree=Cemeteries\">http:\/\/www.cemeteryscribes.com\/getperson.php?personID=I11632&amp;tree=Cemeteries<\/a><\/p>\n<p>and the Myer family of Hereford, never grew to match those in other ports around the country, such as Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Southampton.<\/p>\n<p>However, although small, the community was surprisingly well documented; see<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishgen.org\/jcr-uk\/susser\/provincialjewry\/exeteripsw.htm\">http:\/\/www.jewishgen.org\/jcr-uk\/susser\/provincialjewry\/exeteripsw.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, if you can get hold of a copy, Father Brian Torode\u2019s comprehensive study \u201cThe Hebrew Community of Cheltenham, Gloucester and Stroud. \u00a9 1989 \u00a9 1999 Revised. offers a wealth of useful information.
