    Death of Ellis Berg Gabriel

At Woolwich Samuel Parfitt 25 carman to a dealer in size was charged with causing the death of Ellis Bergo Gabriel, aged three and a half years, son of a tailor in business in High Street, Woolwich. Mr Imsden said that a street organ was playing in the High Street on the previous evening and a number of children were crowded around it, amongst them the deceased and a brother about two years older. The street was rather narrow and as a cart driven by the prisoner approached, there was a cry of warning raised, and the two little boys ran across towards their fatherís shop, but the younger falling down was run over by the wheel of the cart and died very shortly afterwards. The horse was trotting slowly and the prisoner pulled up as soon as he could. Samuel Evans a fitter said he saw the accident and considered that the prisoner was not to blame. The street was crowded and the horse was travelling at a slow trot. Police Sergeant Barnes who witnessed the occurrence said the prisoner was quite sober at the time. Mr Marshall remanded the prisoner on his own bail until after the inquest.
